Career Path of a Bank Clerk

First of all is that getting a Government Job is itself a very big task now a days.  Doesnot matter what post do you get.

But here we are going to discuss on the career path of a Bank Clerk.  Once you became Bank Clerk then there is lot of promotions  could happen

For the initial 3  years you are required to work as a bank Clerk in any Nationalized Bank and after that you could apply for the promotion to Officer Scale 1 i.e. Assistant Manager in the Bank.  But how fast you get promotion depends on certain criteria

  1. Criteria 1: If you have qualified CAIIB Exam, you are eligible for promotion in next 3 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.
  2. Criteria 2: If you have qualified JAIIB Exam, you are eligible for promotion in next 4 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.
  3. Criteria 3: If you have nothing, you are eligible for promotion in next 5 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.

Please Note: There is an Exception for Bank Clerks who are working in BOB [Bank Of Baroda] as they could get promotion in only 1 year even without doing JAIIB and CAIIB.   Only the qualification needed is of BE, BTech, MBA and like that.  These type of qualifications are called as highly qualified.  So, here you are getting a chance to become officer in just 1 years as compared with other Nationalized Banks.

Now, if we speak of Regional Rural Banks (RRB) here scenario of promotion is different.

  1. Criteria 1: If you have qualified CAIIB Exam, you are eligible for promotion in next 4 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.
  2. Criteria 2: If you have qualified JAIIB Exam, you are eligible for promotion in next 5 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.
  3. Criteria 3: If you have nothing, you are eligible for promotion in next 6 years of completion of Bank Clerk Job.

Now, hopefully everyone has understand the concept of promotion on how fast they could achieve.

Once you become Assistant Manager (Scale 1) from Clerk, this is the 1st promotion.  Now, the 2nd Promotion is from Assistant Manager (Scale 1) to Deputy Manager (Scale 2).  3rd Promotion would be from Deputy Manager (Scale 2) to Manager (Scale 3).  4th promotion would be from Manager (Scale 3) to Chief manager (Scale 4).  5th Promotion would be from Chief Manager (Scale 4) to AGM (Assistant General Manager) (Scale 5).  Next Promotion would be from AGM (Assistant General Manager) (Scale 5) to DGM (Deputy General Manager) (Scale 6).  Last promotion would be from DGM (Deputy General Manager) (Scale 6) to GM (General Manager) (Scale 7).

The Flow of Promotion is like this

Clerk —-> Assistant Manager (Scale 1)  —–> Deputy Manager (Scale 2)  —–> Manager (Scale 3) —–> Chief Manager (Scale 4) ——> AGM (Assistant General Manager) (Scale 5) ——-> DGM (Deputy General Manager) (Scale 6)——–> GM (General Manager) (Scale 7)

Coming to the Main Point Mostly Clerk who take promotion could become easily Manager.  Getting promoted as Chief Manager is little bit tough.  Getting Promoted to AGM [Assistant General Manager]  is more tougher.  Only those who are getting promotions on time basically become AGM [Assistant General Manager].  Very few could become DGM [Deputy General Manager] and  very Rare one in lakh could become GM [General Manager].

Getting Promotion to higher scale involves lots of things like Academics Qualification, Banking Qualification, Tuning with seniors, how much knowledge do you have, working experience.

But yes becoming Manager after becoming Bank Clerk is easy one.  Competition arises from Chief manager post onwards.  Real competition is from the rank of becoming AGM [Assistant General Manager].
